Tips & Ideas for Destination Wedding?
Question by Amanda: Tips & Ideas for Destination Wedding?
I want to have a “destination wedding” but inside the US. I have some places in mind but I’m wanting some personal experiences. I’ve never even been to a destination wedding so I’m wondering how it was. What was good/bad etc. I’m not sure if I want it on a beach or garden or church. Also, when do the guests usually arrive? If it is at night, that morning? or the day before or a couple days before? Any info would be appreciated.

I don’t know where you are located, or even if you will find this interesting. It is a beautiful hotel…

I know that you said you already had places in mind, but I would look into this if I were you. There are also, less expensive hotels on Hershey property where other guests can stay. It could be a whole weekend affair.

Just one word of warning about destination weddings: they are typically very inconvenient for your guests, and many people will not be able to attend because of time and money.
If you only want your immediate family and a few close friends to come, then a destination wedding may work well for you. I’ve been invited to three and haven’t been able to go to any of them. Each one would have required me to spend more than $ 1000 on airfare and accomodations, as well as take off work for a couple of days.
That said, if I were to have a destination wedding in the US, it would be in Yosemite National Park.
A destination wedding is just a regular wedding in a different city, that’s all. Once you narrow down what you want, then we might be able to help you.
Research your vendors carefully and ask for references. (Especially since you will not be there in person to see the site or taste the food). A great book to get is The Knot’s Complete Guide To Weddings In The Real World. http://www.amazon.com/Knot-Complete-Guide-Weddings-World/dp/0767916425
It has a lot of reference information. Especially regarding what to look for in vendors and what questions to ask. Make sure that everything you want will be detailed in the contract. The guests will usually arrive a couple of days before the event to get adjusted a little bit before the wedding.
